In the past decade, Seoul has transformed itself into a dynamic, global city that has a rich cultural heritage and boasts appealing design around every corner. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon describes Seoul as a city that has both a long history and a modern society. The New York Times recently ①_____ _____ _____ in its “31 Places to Go in 2010” list.

The newspaper cited Seoul’s cool and hip shops, cafes and galleries as a main reason to see the city. Seoul has worked hard to become a city known for having excellent design and a charming atmosphere. Mayor Oh says it is important for Seoul to use its charm ②___ ____ ______ ____ ________ ____ ______. The country and the city of Seoul have to market itself as a charming, attractive place to be, and Oh says design is very important for that.

Since 2008, the Seoul Design Fair has brought over 2 million visitors each year to the city to view cutting edge designs from around the world. The popular event has helped introduce design to Seoul’s citizens.

Seoul was also named the World Design Capital in 2010, which brought several major projects to the city. Renowned architect Zaha Hadid designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park, a multi-purpose space for fashion and design. The facility also has exhibition and convention halls to promote new works from designers and encourage international exchanges.
 
The city government ③____ ______ ________ ____ Seoul’s public design, and the image it conveys to the rest of the world. There is an official Seoul font with a set of 10 official colors to represent the city. The font is used on city street signs, street lights and street stalls.

Seoul is also working with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to open a design academy. The academy will have experts from Korea and abroad teach about urban design.

People can go on guided tours of Seoul’s traditional palaces, shrines and the Seoul Fortress to learn about design principles based on Feng Shui and Confucius orders. 지난 10년간 서울은, 풍부한 문화 유산을 지니고 있고, 가는 곳마다 멋진 디자인을 볼 수 있는, 역동적이며 세계화된 도시로 변모하였다.

오세훈 서울 시장은, 서울이 오래된 역사와 현대화된 면모를 모두 지닌 도시라고 말했다. 뉴욕 타임즈는 최근 서울을, ‘2010년, 꼭 가봐야 할 도시나 국가 31곳’ 중 3위로 꼽았다. 뉴욕 타임즈는 서울에는 세련되고 유행에 밝은 가게, 카페, 미술관이 많이 있기 때문에 꼭 가봐야 한다고 소개했다.

서울이 훌륭한 디자인과 매력적인 분위기를 가진 도시로 거듭나는 데에는 많은 노력이 들었다. 오세훈 시장은 한국에 외국인들과 외국 회사들이 한국에 오도록 하기 위해서는 서울의 매력을 활용하는 것이 중요하다고 말한다. 또한 오 시장은, 한국과 서울의 매력 알려야 하는데, 이를 위해서는 디자인이 아주 중요하다고 말한다.

2008년 이후 전 세계에서 매년 2백만 명이 넘는 방문객들이 최신 디자인을 보기 위해 서울디자인한마당을 찾았다. 큰 인기를 끌고 있는 이 행사는 서울 시민들에게 서울시의 디자인을 알리는데 크게 기여하였다.

서울은 2010세계디자인수도로 선정되기도 했었고 이 덕분에 도시의 몇몇 주요 건설 계획이 실행될 수 있었다. 저명한 건축가 자하 하디드는 패션과 디자인을 위한 다목적 공간인 동대문 디자인플라자 & 파크를 설계하였다. 이 곳은 전시장 및 컨벤션 홀도 갖추고 있어, 디자이너들의 새로운 작품을 알리며 국제적 교류를 증진하고 있다.

서울시청은 또한 서울시 공공 디자인에 대한 지침을 마련하고, 이 디자인이 세계에 전달하는 이미지를 구상하였다. 서울시를 상징하는 서울서체와 서울색 10가지도 만들었다. 서울서체는 도시의 거리 표지판, 가로등, 노점 등에 사용된다.

서울시는 또한 유네스코와의 협력 하에 디자인 학교를 세우고 있다. 이 학교에선 국내외의 전문가들이 도시 디자인을 가르칠 것이다.
