The World Bank officially announced its new president on April 16. Physician and anthropologist Jim Yong Kim will be the first World Bank president of Korean descent.

“I will seek to transform the World Bank to reflect a rapidly changing world,” Kim said.
Kim, 52, is considered an unorthodox choice to head the World Bank, the primary global lender to impoverished nations. Kim, who was born in Seoul but grew up in the U.S., will be the first head of the World Bank who is not a banker or a career diplomat. Kim became World Bank president in the end, but there was more support for other nominees than in previous selections. This shows that the financial and political influence the United States has over the global economy may not be as strong as it used to be.
