전국 정전 대란

한국은 9월15일 곳곳에서 부분 정전이 발생했다. 정전은 전국적으로 일어났고 오후 동안 여러 지역에서 전력이 수시간 차단되었다.

정부에 따르면 이번 정전 사태는 전기 사용량이 ‘위험 수위’까지 도달하면서 발생한 것이라고 한다. 9월15일 오후는 가을치고 유난히 더워 전국적으로 에어컨 사용량이 급증하였다.

이번 일시적 정전 사태는 210만 가구에 영향을 끼쳤고, 다수의 업체들 또한 피해를 입었다. 특히 식당, 식료품점과 같이 냉장시설을 필요로 하는 업체들이 심한 타격을 입었다. 정부는 정전 사태로 인해 맹렬한 비판을 받았다.

지식경제부에 따르면 만약 일시적으로 전력을 차단하지 않았다면 더 큰 재난이 발생했을 것이라고 한다. 예비전력이 거의 바닥날 수준에 이르렀었으며, 만약 바닥났다면 대규모 정전사태로부터 회복하는데 1주일 가량이 걸렸을 것이다. “당시 예비전력은 24만 킬로 와트에 불과했다. 전부 사용하게 둘 수 없었다.” 라고 지경부의 한 관계자가 말했다
