Peace, in the sense of the absence of war,
is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold.
It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience.
It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods
caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country.
Peace can only last
where human rights are respected,

Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free.
전쟁이 없는 상태란 의미의 평화는 굶주림이나 추위로 죽어가고 있는 사람들에게는 별 의미가 없다. 그러한 평화는 양심수에게 가해지는 고문의 고통을 없애주지 못한다. 그러한 평화는 인접 국가의 무분별한 남벌로 인해 발생한 홍수로 사랑하는 이를 잃은 사람들에게 위안이 되지 못한다. 평화는 인권이 존중되고 사람들이 굶주리지 않으며 개인과 국가가 자유를 누리는 곳에서만 지속될 수 있다.

‘평화’의 의미를 다시 생각해보게 하는 글입니다.
단순히 물리적 전쟁이 없는 상태가 ‘평화’는 아닙니다.
아프가니스탄, 이라크, 가자지구 외에도 ‘평화’가 없는 나라는 너무 많습니다.
한국도 ‘평화’가 없는 대표적인 국가가 아닐까요.
진보와 보수의 싸움, 가진 자와 가지지 못한 자 간의 갈등, 힘있는 사람과 힘없는 사람 간의 갈등...
민주주의와 사회정의가 제대로 실천되는 날까지 한국은 상시 전쟁국가입니다.
한국이 하루빨리 지금보다 훨씬 더 평화로운 나라가 될 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.
