Ireland gay marriage referendum: high urban turnout boosts yes hopes
A huge turnout across urban Ireland has boosted yes campaigners’ hopes for victory in the republic’s referendum on legalising gay marriage as votes are counted in the Catholic country.
The ballots of more than 3 million people are expected to do / make history on Saturday in the global struggle for gay rights in a nation where only 22 years ago homosexuality was still criminalised.
Ballot boxes were opened at 9am on Saturday after some constituencies in the Republic said voting levels on Friday had been unprepared / unprecedented compared with previous referendums.
Voters were offered the chance to amend that constitution to: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with / against law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.”
