Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple, on the slope of Mt. Tohamsan in Gyeongju in the southeastern part of Korea, were inscribed on the World Heritage List on December 9th, 1995, for their artistic beauty, creativity, and unique construction style. The World Heritage List was established by UNESCO in November 1972 with a view to protecting the valuable heritage of humanity from damage or destruction. Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) states in Section 9 “Filial Piety” of Vol. 5, that in 751 Prime Minister Kim Dae-seong initiated the construction of Seokbulsa (Stone Buddha Temple; present Seokguram) and Bulguksa for his parents of his previous and present life respectively. Kim died before their completion and the state took over and finished the project in 774. Hence, built by the court rather than by an individual, the two temples exemplify the religion, sculptural techniques, and political and social backgrounds of the time. Architecture and Sculpture Reflecting the Kingdom The two temples embody in their construction style and sculpture the characteristics of the Unified Silla Kingdom in the 8th century. Recreating the historic moment of Buddha's attaining enlightenment, the main Buddha of Seokguram is the same size as and features the same bhumisparsa mudra as the gilt-bronze Buddha in Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, which appears in Da Tang Xiyu Ji(Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions) by Xuanzang(602-664). Based on the Flower Garland Sutra, the bhumisparsa mudra is the hand gesture of pointing to the ground with the index finger of the right hand while the left hand rests on the lap with the palm facing up. It symbolizes the Buddha's attaining of enlightenment under the bodhi tree after overcoming obstructions and the temptations of the devil. The eleven-faced Avalokitesvara right behind the main Buddha in Seokguram is an aspect of Esoteric Buddhism.
Simplicity vs. Ornamentation: The Harmony of Contrast Besides the religious and ideological aspects, Bulguksa is wonderful for its artistry. The simple Seokgatap and the decorative Dabotap are a unique, brilliant pair of pagodas in East Asia for their beautiful contrast and proportional harmony. The seated gilt-bronze Buddha images in the Vairocana and Amitabha Halls have straight backs, massive shoulders, voluminous chests and elongated waists, exhibiting grandiose beauty. From these images it can be inferred that the Silla people had such advanced casting technology that they were able to prevent the formation of air bubbles even in life-size sculptures. In Seokguram the architectural and sculptural elements are so harmoniously balanced that the temple is a masterpiece of art that embodies the religious thinking and excellent masonry of the time. The design of the stone grotto is based on the golden mean, the main unit being 12 dangcheok (approx. 30㎝), and its various bas-relief images are arranged in order according to rank, reflecting the way to enlightenment. In the antechamber are eight guardian deities of the lowest rank, and a pair of deva-kings wearing an infuriated expression and striking a posture suggestive of the Korean martial art taekwondo. Along the corridor leading to the main rotunda are the four heavenly kings clad in armor and holding weapons, and on the walls of the rotunda are the deities protecting the Buddha including Brahma-Deva and Sakradevanam Indra. All the images are elaborately fashioned to realistically express their importance and characteristics. The structure of Seokguram with a square antechamber and rotunda reflects the ancient eastern idea that “the sky is round and the earth square.” The ideally expressed main Buddha, elegant Bodhisattvas, ten disciples with their own personalities, four heavenly kings of temperate power, and brave deva-kings strike a harmonic balance and transcend the boundary between reality and the ideal. This World Heritage site has many valuable cultural properties that have been designated as National Treasures by the Korean government, and its value is enhanced by its religious symbolism and originality, expressed within the framework of cultural influence from China and India. ▶ 글_ 정은우 동아대 고고미술사학과, 문화재전문위원 ▶ by Jeong Eun-u - Archaeology & Art History Department at Dong-A University and Specialist on the Cultural Heritage Committee |
