영문 단편 소설을 만나보는 Short Stories 시간입니다. 오늘부터 새로 읽어볼 소설은 역시 헤밍웨이의 작품인 “하루의 기다림(A Day’s Wait)”입니다. 1933년 발간된 단편집 에 실린 작품으로, 감기에 걸린 9살짜리 소년의 오해를 그린 소설이죠.
그럼 우리말로 쓰인 부분이 원문에서는 어떻게 쓰였는지 추론해보면서 함께 읽어볼까요?

 

 

He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed and I saw he ~해 보였다 ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move.

“What’s the matter, Schatz?”

“I’ve got a headache.”

“You better go back to bed.”

“No. I’m all right.”

“You go to bed. I’ll see you when I’m dressed.”

But when I came 아래층으로 he was dressed, 곁에 앉아서 the fire, looking a very sick and miserable boy of nine years. When I put my hand on his forehead I knew he had a fever.

“You go up to bed,” I said, “you’re sick.”

“I’m all right,” he said.
