인격격차가 계층격차를 만든다!

 

 

There is at least a kernel of truth in the narratives of both the left and the right,
but they too often overlook a major piece of the mobility puzzle: character. 
Just as there are gaps by class in academic attainment and physical health, 
there are gaps in levels of prudence and drive, as well as other "non-cognitive" 
skills such as empathy, openness, and self-esteem. These disparities in the development
of character strengths are both a cause and consequence of inequality. 
Drive and prudence in particular improve an individual's chance of success in life, 
and being raised among those with drive and prudence improves one's chance of acquiring 
such traits. 
Character thus becomes a self-reinforcing quality that develops, in part, 
along class lines.

좌우 진영의 이야기 속에는 적어도 진실의 일면이 있다. 그러나 이들은 자주 사회적 계층 이동의 문제를 구성하는 중요한 한 측면인 ‘인격’을 간과한다. 학업성취도나 신체 건강의 측면에서도 격차가 있듯이 공감, 열린 마음, 자존감 등과 같은 비인지적 스킬과 함께 신중한 분별력과 열심히 하는 태도의 수준에도 격차가 있다. 이런 실용적 인격의 격차가 불평등의 원인과 결과가 되고 있다. 특히 미래에 대한 신중한 분별력, 열정, 추진력 등은 살아가면서 성공의 가능성을 높인다. 이런 자질을 가진 부모 밑에서 태어나 자란 아동들은 이런 자질을 물려받을 가능성이 더 크다. 이와 같이 인격은 어떤 계층에서 태어났느냐에 따라 다른 인격이 형성되는 성질을 가진다.

이 글은 도덕적 인격(moral character)과 달리 공감능력, 
열린 마음 등을 성과인격(performance character)이러고 부르네요.
용어에는 공감이 안 가도, 내용에는 수긍이 갑니다.
글쓴이의 주장에 의하면 학교 교육, 가정교육 모두 성과인격을 잘 발달시키면 
각종 격차를 줄일 수 있다고 합니다. 그런데 성과인격의 격차를 어떻게 줄일 수 있죠?
