100년 전에는 갈대나 풀(잎)을 엮어 침대를 만들어 사용했습니다. 그러다보니, 매트리스에 밤마다 들쥐를 포함해서 이름 모를 온갖 벌레들이 찾아와 밤마다 주인을 물고 괴롭혔겠지요. 그래서 잠도 편하게 자고 숨어있는 들쥐들을 내쫓기 위해 매트리스 네 귀퉁이의 로프를 팽팽히 당기곤 했습니다. 그래서 생긴 말이 'Sleep tight'입니다. 이때의 tight는 원래는 '팽팽히'란 뜻에서 왔지만 'Sleep tight'란 표현 속에서는 'soundly, properly, well, effectively'란 의미를 갖습니다.
