  원곡은 Henry Clay Work (1832-1884) 이 1876년에 만든 Grandfather's Clock 이라는 미국동요이다. 할아버지가 태어나시던 아침부터 한번도 쉬지않고 째각 거리던 시계가 할아버지 돌아가시던 밤 멈추었다는 내용이다.

My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf

So it stood ninety years on the floor

It was taller by far than the old man himself

Though it weighed not a penny weight more

  할아버지 시계는 선반에 올려놓기에는 너무 커서 그래서 90년 동안이나 마루에 세워 두었답니다.

시계는 할아버지보다 훨씬 컸어요.

비록 그렇게 무겁지는 않았지만요.

  It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born

And was always his treasure and pride

But it stopped short never to go again

When the old man died

  할아버지께서 태어나신 날 아침에 우리집에 왔지요
